| Vorticity is basically the curvature of the winds. If there is enough curvature to the winds and other conditions are right then the winds will begin to rotate. This map shows vorticity, but again it does not show at what level of the atmosphere the rotation is. Tropical systems must have a low and mid level circulation, with what is called an anticyclone in the upper levels in order to intensify. Anticyclone refers to the fact that the upper level winds are rotating opposite of the low and mid level circulations of a tropical system. The anticyclone is also an area of high pressure which is also the opposite of a tropical system. Anticyclones are what create the outflow bands seen in periphiry tropical system imagery. |
