| Generally tropical systems will need water that is 80 degrees Fahrenheit or about 26.7 degrees celsius to form. The warmer the water the better the chance for storm intensification and formation. The warm water must also be fairly deep, about 160 feet, or the tropical system will churn up the cooler waters below which could inhibit formation and intensification. This SST map shows sea surface temperatures which have been derived using satellite information. |
